-
Held at KKL in Lucerne, this distinguished event presented an unparalleled opportunity to delve into the future of internationalization in higher education, spotlighting emerging challenges and perspectives within an increasingly complex global landscape.

The conference emphasized that we live in a highly international environment and that we need to further develop the global competencies of the entire academic community by promoting the internationalization of education and research, as outlined in the swissuniversities strategy for 2025-2028, to ensure Switzerland's international excellence.

The second day of the conference focused on the European perspective and policy considerations on internationalization, with ¾«¶«Ó°Òµâ€™s General Director Franco Gervasoni providing an in-depth look on the specific challenges faced by Swiss academic institutions: participation in European research programs, student mobility, collaboration, attracting qualified resources and developing global competencies. He highlighted the additional challenges faced by a border and Italian-speaking canton such as Ticino.

Annick Catella, Coordinator of ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ's International Office, presented the case of "The Swiss Global Competence Lab (SGCL) – a local response to internationalization in higher education", alongside her colleague Jaqueline Bürki, Global Management Lecturer at BFH. The presentation spotlighted various initiatives and measures implemented by a consortium of four professional universities—¾«¶«Ó°Òµ, HES-SO, ZHAW and BFH—to promote the Internationalization of the Curriculum (IoC). The engagement and involvement of the entire academic community, including faculty and administrative staff, research and teaching sectors, and all institutional services, is of paramount importance. The establishment of an inclusive dialogue, characterized by openness and constructive criticism about the definitions, expectations, and requirements associated with internationalization is important. Such discussions can lead to a change of mindset and foster a predisposition toward the internationalization process.

In conclusion, the Bürgenstock Conference 2024 served as a pivotal moment for reflection and dialogue on the challenges faced by a society in transition. It provided a comprehensive overview of the Swiss university context regarding internationalization and its commitment to excellence.
