Building system - ISAAC
The Building system sector (SEDI) promotes the sustainable management and development of real estate through the use of innovative tools and methodologies for the assessment and analysis of buildings. It supports the construction industry in developing innovative building solutions that benefit everyone, in line with Switzerland's 2050 energy strategy, by integrating technology and architecture as a holistic approach to Baukultur. The sector is composed of three teams: Building management, Innovative envelope, and Sustainable buildings and constructions, which collaborate on shared, multidisciplinary projects, with a particular focus on pilot and demonstration projects as opportunities for technological transfer and innovative approaches.
The local and international dimension is crucial for the growth of the sector and the continuous development of innovations. The sector operates both at the cantonal level, through collaborations with the Section of Logistics and the Section for the Protection of Air, Water, and Soil, along with their various cantonal offices, and with different municipal technical offices; and at the federal level, through cooperation with the Polytechnics (ETHZ and EPFL), as well as other professional schools (such as HSLU, ZHAW, FHNW, and FHB).
Particularly, collaborations with industries that produce innovative building envelope systems have led the sector to work internationally on European research and development mandates, mainly focusing on energy and sustainability in construction, aiming for the rational use of energy and promoting the enhancement of renewable energy sources. Activities in this sector aim for high-quality built environments and achieving sustainable development goals, with particular attention to both active and passive building envelopes and their innovative potential.
Innovative envelope (BIPV)
The Innovative envelope team, part of the Building systems sector, focuses on innovative building envelope systems for energy-efficient buildings and active solar envelopes (Building Integrated Photovoltaics - BIPV).
Sustainable buildings and constructions
The Sustainable buildings and constructions team, part of the Building systems sector, works on the sustainability of buildings, from their conception to construction, their lifecycle, and their integration into the surrounding environment.
Building management
The Building management team works in the field of building conservation, energy and functional renovation, and proper property and space management, utilizing digital tools such as Building Information Modeling (BIM).
