Sustainable buildings and constructions - ISAAC

Team of the Building system sector

The Sustainable buildings and construction team, part of the Building system sector, is concerned with the buildings' sustainability, from conception to construction, its life cycle and its incorporation into the local area. The team's mission is to develop practical approaches and innovative solutions to achieve the ambitious goals of a sustainable society. The Sustainable buildings and constructions team addresses all the issues related to sustainable living: energy (thermal and electrical), embodied energy, the water cycle, food production, biodiversity in the built environment (flora and fauna), the reversibility of construction interventions, and mobility. This change cannot only be technological (energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy carriers) but must also be behavioral by introducing the concept of responsibility and circularity . Circularity  also translates into an attention to the built heritage as an available structure and cultural value.
The group interleaves research, consulting, and education (undergraduate, graduate and continuing education) activities. In applied research, the team pursues goals related to both the development of the state of the art in sustainability standards and the transfer of these approaches into the design, construction, and operation of buildings.

  • Develop innovative models for inhabiting the Planet through practical projects focusing on transition in various construction sectors.
  • Apply and develop approaches to the design and construction of buildings that consider the entire life cycle.
  • Evaluate low-tech sustainability strategies both in new buildings and in the renovation and conservation of existing ones.
  • Apply and develop sustainability standards from the building scale to the neighborhood scale, both in new construction and in the renovation and conservation of existing buildings.
  • Promote and research materials and construction systems that meet all sustainability parameters.
  • Develop and propose approaches, methods, and materials from a circular economy perspective.
