Master of Science in Engineering - Photonics and Laser Engineering

The Photonics and Laser Engineering profile of the Master of Science in Engineering trains an interdisciplinary professional figure capable of designing electronic and mechanical systems related to photonics and laser technology.

The MSE study profile in Photonics and Laser Technology provides fundamental knowledge of the physical principles and processes involved in photonics and laser-related technologies on a sound scientific basis. Graduates have a thorough understanding of electronic and mechanical systems related to photonics. They are able to combine knowledge previously acquired in other fields with knowledge specific to the field of photonics to become highly interdisciplinary professionals.

  • Basic components (optoelectronic detectors and emitters, opto-mechanical elements);
  • Lighting techniques, light metrology and colorimetry
  • Application of lasers in materials processing and 3D printing
  • Advanced inspection, vision and imaging systems
  • Design and realisation of automation and production-oriented sensors and photonic systems
  • Simulation through numerical models of multidisciplinary systems comprising electronic, mechanical, microtechnical elements
  • Fibre optic technologies and applications
  • Conceptualisation of opto-mechanical and opto-electronic interfaces

With sound methodological skills, photonic engineers are able to solve complex problems with appropriate methods. They can quickly obtain an overview of the current state of technology, evaluate existing scientific approaches and select and apply them to their own situation. They are also able to assess the feasibility and market utility of new photonic systems.

Thanks to their curriculum, photonic engineers can lead multidisciplinary project teams, as well as communicate, collaborate and interact in an interdisciplinary manner with experts from other fields (e.g. mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, medical and biotechnology engineering, computer science or data science).

The Master of Science in Engineering is the highest degree conferred by a university of applied sciences in Switzerland in the fields of engineering and IT.

MSE graduates can continue their education with a PhD at Swiss or international universities and polytechnics, as well as through continuing education courses:

Specialization modules

Modules that vary according to the specialization profile.This part of the curriculum allows for an in-depth study of specific topics and an approach to the world of practice by working on individual projects, group projects or by attending seminars and Summer Schools.

Thesis


30 ECTS 

Enables the skills acquired during the course of study to be put into practice and further developed.
The work undertaken must meet high methodological, conceptual and scientific requirements. The thesis takes the form of a project assigned by a company, organisation or a research assignment awarded within the university of applied sciences.

    Progetti di semestre e di diploma vengono svolti in collaborazione con aziende e istituzioni del territorio per confrontarsi con temi reali e avvicinarsi al mondo industriale.

    I moduli vengono offerti in inglese a Lugano,  in tedesco o francese a Losanna e in tedesco o inglese a Zurigo.
