Sebastiano is a graduate of the Master of Science in Engineering with Photonics and Laser Engineering profile. He encourages students to engage actively in lectures and pursue their thesis within a company. This approach allows them to immerse themselves in a real-world work environment.
How would you describe the course?
â¶Ä‹The course in Photonics and Laser Engineering focuses on the study of the main electronic components related to photonics, including lasers, LED diodes, photodiodes and image sensors, as well as circuits for handling these devices, such as drivers and amplifiers. It includes a theoretical component that delves into the fundamental physical principles of the discipline, such as the nature of photons and the conversion processes between light and electrical signals. Additionally, it features a practical component, which involves two semester-long projects and a thesis project. These hands-on activities provide an opportunity to apply acquired knowledge and gain new insights while collaborating closely with industry experts.
Which are the pros of studying at the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI)?
â¶Ä‹A significant advantage is the harmonious fusion of theory and practice, usually considered two distant realities. his approach allows students to gain hands-on experience in their field right from the start of their education, while still maintaining a strong theoretical foundation, ensuring a smooth transition into the professional world. Additionally, students have the opportunity to engage with seasoned researchers who are eager to share their expertise and provide guidance throughout the learning process.
Is there a particularly significant experience you would like to tell us about?
â¶Ä‹During my academic journey, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a Ticino company through my semester and thesis projects, gaining better understanding of how the company operates, its organizational dynamics and priorities. I highly recommend this experience as it provides an opportunity to immerse myself in a very different context from the university environment.

Which are your future goals?
â¶Ä‹My goal is to pursue a career in research, a field that captivates me due to its continuous opportunities to learn new concepts, collaborate on diverse projects, and make meaningful contributions to the scientific community.
What would you recommend to a current and/or prospective student?
â¶Ä‹An important advice I’d like to offer is to actively engage in lectures, understanding that studying is not just about earning a degree but also about preparing for your future career and nurturing your passions. Additionally, I recommend going beyond the material presented in class by exploring certain concepts further on your own. Remember that your lecturers and researchers are there to assist with any questions or concerns you may have.
