Active on many fronts at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ's Department of Education and Learning / University of Teacher Education (DFA/ASP), Nicola brings his experience as a teacher, emphasizing the importance of integrating theory and practice in teaching.
What is your educational background and what do you do today?
â¶Ä‹I obtained a Bachelor's degree in Clinical Curative Pedagogy at the University of Fribourg in 2007 and, after several years in which I worked mainly at a service active in the field of autism, I obtained a Master's degree in Specialised Pedagogy at the same university in 2019.
I have been working at the DFA/ASP since the end of 2017 and am mainly involved in training, both basic and continuing, and in the coordination of the CAS Training for Pedagogical Workers for Integration (OPI). I am also part of the degree course commission of the Master in Specialised Pedagogy and Inclusive Didactics, a training in which I am active as a lecturer and module leader. Over the years I have also contributed to some research projects and services provided by the Competence Centre for School, Social and Educational Needs (BESS).
In your role you deal with issues-among others-such as school inclusion and autism spectrum disorders. What are the main challenges you encounter in your work as a trainer?
â¶Ä‹My goal as a lecturer is to create training contexts in which students can learn effectively and with pleasure, reflecting individually and collectively on the topics covered and growing both professionally and personally. One of the challenges is to provide quality, human-rich training that enables participants to apply what they learn in their own work contexts.
And the greatest satisfaction?
â¶Ä‹The satisfactions, as far as I am concerned, I find in the exchanges with male and female students, colleagues. The opportunity to share knowledge and experience with numerous people is one of the aspects that make this profession special in my eyes.
In your experience, how important is the integration of theory and practice in teacher training?
â¶Ä‹The integration of theory and practice is one of the core elements of education and is something that students report as important to them. It is a goal that I keep in mind and that guides my teaching, aware that it is also a challenge.
What advice would you give to someone considering embarking on a path like yours?
â¶Ä‹Rather than advice, I would tell him/her that I am available if he/she would like to have a chat.
