Andrea teaches the Digital Communication & Content Production module of the Bachelor's Degree in Leisure Management. Within the Bachelor's program, he is also the Internship Coordinator, acting as an interface between students and partner companies before, during, and after the internships carried out in the third year of the program.
The Bachelor of Science in Leisure Management not only allows students to develop solid theoretical and methodological skills, but also combines a strong practical focus through testimonials, projects, and internships. What exactly does the internship in the third year of the program involve?
â¶Ä‹The internship is a compulsory 24 ECTS module, which takes place in the second semester of the third year of the Bachelor's degree program, between mid-February and the end of August. It is a fundamental practical experience for students, guaranteed by the study program and carried out at local, national, or international organizations in the leisure sector. It can last 18 weeks with 100% employment or 22 weeks with 80% employment. The aim of the internship is to allow students to apply the knowledge acquired in the first two and a half years of training in a practical way, working in an organizational, administrative, or operational capacity. Students are integrated into the host organization as real employees, actively contributing to the activities of the company or institution that welcomes them.
Where can the third-year internship be carried out?
â¶Ä‹
There are many internship opportunities in various sectors of the leisure industry, which can be carried out in Ticino, Switzerland, or abroad. Taking into account the preferences of students, it is possible to carry out internships in very different contexts. Some, for example, have collaborated with clubs and sports societies such as Football Club Lugano or Hockey Club Ambrì Piotta. Others, more closely related to the tourism sector, have worked in hotels, accommodation facilities, or tourism organizations. Some have focused on culture and events, collaborating with festivals, museums, or artistic organizations such as the Locarno Film Festival, the LAC, the Compagnia Finzi Pasca, Moon&Stars, or the Events and Congresses Division of the City of Lugano. Each experience is tailored to the specific characteristics of the host organization, with a profile that includes the main tasks to be performed and the skills that can be acquired. In addition, regardless of location and field, each internship aims to provide students with support in what is for many their first encounter with the world of work, enabling them to acquire the skills required by the job market in this sector.
How is the internship evaluated?
â¶Ä‹
Since the internship is a module in its own right, in order to obtain the 24 ECTS credits, students must receive a positive evaluation from their company supervisor. During the internship period, several meetings are organized between the student, the Bachelor's internship supervisor, and the host partner to monitor the progress of the experience and the acquisition of professional skills. At the end of the program, the company or organization fills out an evaluation form that takes into account various skills, including managerial, organizational, and communication skills. If the evaluation is insufficient, the internship must be repeated in the following academic year.
Internships can sometimes be a real springboard into the world of work. Can you tell us some stories of former students whose professional careers began with an internship?
The internship has been a real springboard in more than one case. Throughout the internship, partners have the opportunity to get to know the student's skills and potential firsthand. In several cases, the internship has led to a real job opportunity at the end of the Bachelor's degree, as in the case of Hockey Club Ambrì Piotta, the Locarno Film Festival, Football Club Lugano, Moon&Stars, and HBenchmark. Others, such as Compagnia Finzi Pasca and Swiss Triathlon, have opted to extend the internship period, offering students the opportunity to acquire additional skills for their professional careers. Finally, in other cases, the internship period has been an opportunity to enter the world of work with professional experience in the field and thus find employment with other companies with which we do not have an active collaboration.
