Environmental biotechnology
The laboratory develops chemical-physical and biotechnological processes for wastewater treatment and energy recovery from biomass.
Vector ecology
Surveillance and control of disease vector organisms for humans and animals such as mosquitoes and phlebotomes.
Microbial ecology
Study of microbial diversity in ecosystems, particularly aquatic ones, and the effect they have on the environment.
Hygiene and environment
Characterisation of organisms isolated from different environments by methods of classical microbiology, molecular biology, metagenomics, transcriptomics and proteomics.
The Microbiology Institute has facilities in Bellinzona and Mendrisio in which it conducts research and offers services and training in the areas of biosafety, environmental hygiene, pathogen vector control, microbial ecology and environmental biotechnology.

Analysis of highly pathogenic agents from environmental samples
The Regional Laboratory South (LR South), part of the Swiss RLN network, handles type B biological alarms, supports reference centres and ensures decentralised analysis of high-risk microorganisms.
Biocide activity on biofilm (ASTM E2871-21)
Method to evaluate the efficacy of biocides against microbial biofilms using the CDC Biofilm Reactor and the single-tube technique.
Biomethanation Potential (BMP)
In the laboratory, the maximum production of biogas and methane in anaerobic digestion is determined to evaluate the efficiency of the process and the effect of different combinations of substrates.
Biosafety and vector-borne infectious diseases consulting
We offer technical and specialist support in the event of biosecurity problems on the ground (biological events, contaminated areas, epidemics, vector-borne pathogens, etc.).
Courses in schools
We offer courses and educational materials on the topic of mosquitoes for teaching in schools (preschools, elementary, middle, high schools, and universities).
Detection of microorganisms in samples of different origin
Research allows the Hygiene and Environment sector a continuous cognitive and technical update that can thus be put at the service of projects applied in-house or requested by third parties.
Determination and management of mosquitoes
We offer private facilities advice on managing mosquito nuisance.
Evaluation of mosquito control systems
We offer laboratory tests on the effectiveness of mosquito repellent or biocide products.
