The is dedicated to promoting innovation and collaboration in Switzerland among young professionals working in advanced manufacturing.
Anneke Orlandini, a graduate of the Master of Science in Engineering program and a PhD student in the Automation, Robotics and Machines (ARM) Laboratory at the Institute of Systems and Technologies for Sustainable Production (ISTePS), won the Connect Talk award for her project Surface Functionalization of Ti6Al4V for orthopaedic implants.
The project concerns the surface treatment of Titanium (Ti6Al4V) for medical use using femtosecond laser technology, which offers extreme repeatability of the process but needs further research to make it cost-effective and practically advantageous at the industrial level.
"The challenge is to find and understand how surface engineering complements the intended biological outcomes. The connect talk is a work 'in progress,' which for this type of event serves to strengthen collaborations in academia. My work was appreciated for the multidisciplinarity required: between expertise in engineering, biomedical and biology," commented the researcher".
