Franco Sprugasci works as a nurse at the Addiction Service, Antenna Icaro - Centre of Competence; he decided to attend the DAS Mental Health and Psychiatry in order to strengthen his specialist skills in this area and to improve his knowledge of the Ticino health system through comparison with other care professionals.
Where do you work and what do you do?
â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹I work at the Addiction Service, Antenna Icaro - Competence Centre, at the Muralto site. Broadly speaking, I am in charge of the nursing management of patients treated at the service's outpatient clinic. These are patients with a substance use disorder or dual diagnosis.
What motivated you to attend DAS Mental Health and Psychiatry?
â¶Ä‹There are various aspects that motivated me to attend this DAS. For the sake of simplicity I will describe the main three. First of all, I cannot fail to list the request expressed by my employer for me to specialise in this area. Then of course the possibility, or rather the certainty, of improving my knowledge in this field. This motivation, which is closely linked to the first, also has a personal connotation, as I am convinced that the skills acquired will also benefit my private life. As a third motivation, the greater knowledge of the Ticino health system given by the comparison with the various DAS fellows. From the various clinics (both private and public) to the spitex or from the old people's homes to the various services on the ground: knowing the network is essential to be able to guarantee quality work.
How would you describe your experience attending DAS?
â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹Undoubtedly it is an enriching experience and as such implies a certain commitment. An enjoyable commitment! On a daily basis, I can compare myself with colleagues and lecturers, bring my opinion and listen to theirs. This is for the 'professional' experience, but there is also the more personal experience as I spend what one might call friendly moments with fellow students
What are the main skills acquired? How is what you learnt in the classroom transferred to your professional context?
â¶Ä‹Each module is constructed in such a way as to increase various skills, for example scientific research to update and legitimise our daily work. Or the construction of a project for change, in order not to be content with our workplaces but to be able to think and propose changes. The nurse not only takes care of the patient, but also takes care of the place where the patient is treated.
To whom would you recommend, and why, this training course?
â¶Ä‹To everyone! Training in mental health and psychiatry provides knowledge and skills that are transversal to the various professional fields in which the nurse is expected to work. One cannot separate the psyche from the body.
