TheSchool-based Ergotherapy internship is an interprofessional training practice proposal that was created in collaboration with the local compulsory school.
The internship takes place in pairs and includes an initial phase in which the students are placed in the partner schools' classrooms in order to identify the teacher's need for a theme from the curriculum. The subsequent phases consist of the planning and realisation of recreational-learning material to be handed over to the client with the aim of supporting the students' learning on the selected theme.
Lo Stage Ergoterapia School-based è un progetto di Service Learning che consente di integrare i bisogni formativi degli studenti in Ergoterapia ad un servizio per la comunità , in particolare la Scuola.
The School-based Ergotherapy Internship is a Service Learning project that enables the integration of the training needs of Ergotherapy students with a service to the community, in particular the School.
The internship includes an initial phase in which a group of students is placed in various regular, inclusive, integrated and special school sections to identify the teacher's need in relation to the class on a specific topic. The project continues with the planning and realisation of activities and recreational-learning material to be handed over to the client at the end of the internship.
The School-based Ergotherapy Internship presents itself as an innovative training opportunity that aligns with the World Federation of Occupational Therapists'guidance that encourages occupational therapists and all associated organisations to promote occupational therapy in schools as a collaborative practice to reduce and remove barriers to educational participation and well-being, as it considers inclusive education a fundamental and non-negotiable right (WFOT, 2016).
It also brings ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ training practice closer to the community environment in line with the updated Occupational Therapy Process and Framework (2020), which emphasises the importance of occupational therapists in community interventions.
The module takes place in blended learning mode and integrates the use of technology with the help of digital platforms such as ePortfolio and Microsoft Teams. The project offers small group learning and individualised pedagogical support.
The School-based Ergotherapy Internship is an innovative and unique opportunity on Swiss soil and was also created thanks to valuable collaboration with the region, which recognises the value of interprofessional practice in education. In its first three editions, the project involved the Arzo and Pedrinate Preschools and the Mendrisio Special School. The third edition was characterised by the involvement of all three school sites. The project offers the school an expanding collaboration into the future.
