Guido Zaccarelli is Director of the Design Institute and Head of the CAS in Museum Collections Management and Development. A pathway dedicated to professionals in the sector that stems from a research project, a symbol of the interaction existing between the worlds of education and applied research.
How did the CAS in Museum Collections Management and Development come about?
The course is part of the "COLLECTIONBIT" research project at the Design Institute and involves three promoting museums. Participants are asked to make an intensive commitment to improving and reformulating the methodology of approach to the management and development of museum collections.
Combining the research project with CAS seemed to us to be an excellent opportunity to structure these activities and at the same time be able to provide skills that are recognised as a university education.
 
How does knowledge transfer with applied research benefit the participants?
Before dedicating myself to research, I experienced my discipline field as a 'simple' professional. Therefore, I can say that I find the many small scientific and methodological revolutions that applied research brings to our profession particularly relevant. In a continuing education course such as this, research brings its results to synthesis in teaching terms. Those who decide to attend receive a kind of request for change: your profession is 'warning' you that you must change, and the effort we are called upon to make is what will qualify us later as professionals.
On a personal note, what is this experience giving you?
As an adjunct professor, I constantly carry out training and research activities, between which the knowledge transfer is continuous, incessant. I move in a fluid situation, which allows me to look at my discipline every day with the curiosity of someone who is willing to get involved.
Returning to the CAS: who is it for?
鈥嬧�嬧�嬧�嬧�嬧�嬧�婽he course is open to the staff of (Association of Ticino Ethnographic Museums)  and the (Centre for Dialectology and Ethnography) , professionals who need continuous training. The added value of the CAS is to put them in permanent contact, for a professional exchange that goes beyond didactics.
