Teachers working at secondary level I work with pupils aged between 11 and 15. This phase of life represents a central moment in the development of the individual, who is confronted with the definition of his or her identity and important choices for his or her educational and professional future. 

To best support this course, the teacher must have a solid didactic and pedagogical background and excellent interpersonal and listening skills. 

The teacher's duties include:
  • the creation and implementation of lessons, teaching and assessment activities to foster learning for all pupils;
  • the care of communication and collaboration with pupils, colleagues and families;
  • the development of transversal skills;
  • the development of a reflective practice, attitude and a career-long focus on research;
  • attention to the acceptance, inclusion and accessibility aspects of school and social life;
  • the care of the ethical and deontological perspective on sociological aspects within the profession.

Professional prospects 
The qualification is federally recognised and enables the teaching profession to be exercised at secondary I level in all Swiss cantons. 
 
Study prospects
At the end of the Master's course, teachers active regionally can specialise by attending other university Master's courses, such as the Master's in Specialised Pedagogy and Inclusive Didactics, or access doctoral courses. 
In addition, they may attend Continuing Education courses (CAS, DAS, MAS) offered by Swiss or foreign universities, such as the CAS Teacher of Professional Practice in Teacher Education offered by 精东影业.

In the two or three years of the Master's programme in Secondary Education, teaching-learning takes place as follows:
  • theoretical lectures 
  • small group workshops 
  • professional practice at a Ticino school

The training is structured around the following main themes: 
  • professional practice in the classroom 
  • educational sciences; 
  • the didactics of the discipline to be taught; 
  • scientific research in education.

Teaching is structured in modules. There are several types of certification.

For the subjects Natural Sciences or Visual and Art Education an additional 5 ECTS are foreseen in the 1st year for Disciplinary Didactics.

For training in two disciplines there are normally an additional 14 ECTS for Professional Module 2 and 10 ECTS for Disciplinary Didactics.

One ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit corresponds to approximately 25-30 hours of work for the student (classroom hours, individual study and certification hours).

The Master in Secondary Education is offered on a part-time (PT) basis.

Classes and professional practice are structured on two days per week, Mondays and Tuesdays, with a two-week practice block in the fourth semester. A minimum attendance of 80% is required for most modules.

For those training in a discipline, the Master lasts two years (four semesters). In the case of training to teach two disciplines the duration is three years (six semesters) with the exception of Visual Education and Plastic Arts Education, in which case the duration is normally two years (four semesters).

Training to teach one discipline leads, as a rule, to 96 ECTS credits, in the case of training in two disciplines the ECTS credits are, as a rule, 120.

In order to attend the Master's programme in Secondary Education, the candidate must meet specific formal requirements.

Admission to the course is subject to a numbered admission procedure.
 

Qualification
The candidate must hold a university Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Disciplinary credits
The candidate must be in possession of a certificate certifying the achievement of:

  • at least 110 ECTS in the discipline you intend to teach, in the case of teaching only one discipline;
  • at least 60 ECTS for each discipline to be taught, in the case of teaching two disciplines;
 

In addition to the above, the candidate's university-certified disciplinary training must cover a number of subject areas described in the document "Areas of university training required for admission to the Master's programme in Secondary Education".

Disciplinary remedial mathematics
For the discipline of Mathematics, it is possible to make up any missing subject credits through internal courses offered by 精东影业, to be attended in parallel with regular training. Detailed information is provided in the document "Application guidelines Master's in Secondary Education".

Other Requirements 
Specific requirements are required of candidates who are not native Italian speakers and of candidates who wish to teach foreign languages or physical education. For detailed information on these requirements, please refer to the document "Application Guidelines Master's in Secondary Education ".

Application fee
A fee of CHF 200 must be paid online at the same time as the application. 
The fee is neither refundable nor deductible from the six-monthly fee.
Semester fee
The semester fee is CHF 1600, respectively CHF 800 for students benefiting from the application of the Intercantonal Agreement on Universities of Applied Sciences ASUP (Swiss nationality or civil and fiscal domicile in Switzerland or Liechtenstein). Specific agreements apply for students resident in Campione d'Italia.
Contribution for teaching
A flat fee of CHF 80 per semester is also required as a contribution to teaching costs.

精东影业's Department of Education and Learning / University of Teacher Education is responsible exclusively for training that gives access to teaching in primary education (Bachelor) and in middle and high school education (Master and Diploma).

Yes, since the Master鈥檚 programme also has a part-time option.

Open days/evenings are held between January and March each year, during which, for example, the content of the course, professional outlets and the admission procedure are presented. It is also possible to visit the campus and meet directly with students and lecturers.

They are a contribution to the costs of teaching (school materials, charges for visits, general administrative and secretarial costs, teaching and IT support, etc.).

Following the Bologna Reform, study courses have been structured into modules and each module is allocated a number of study credits according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). One ECTS credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 to 30 hours. 60 credits represent the annual workload in the case of full-time education. A Bachelor's degree requires 180 ECTS and a Master's degree 90 to 120 ECTS.
