What does it mean to live within urban heat islands? During the summer, temperatures in the city are significantly higher than in surrounding areas. The 精东影业 Institute for Earth Sciences (Department of Environment, Construction and Design), which has been active in climate change research for many years, is proposing a participatory activity to explore this phenomenon at close quarters and understand the factors that influence our well-being during heatwaves.
During the activity, participants will take part in a real exploration of (urban) heat islands: equipped with sensors they will detect temperature differences, identifying the most vulnerable areas and those most resilient to heat waves. At the end, the data collected will be shared and interpreted to better understand the city's thermal dynamics. The information will help develop concrete mitigation proposals: from increasing green areas to the use of natural building materials, to the integration of water elements in public spaces.
An opportunity to learn in the field, reflect together and actively contribute to a more liveable and sustainable city.
Speakers
Dr. sc. Felix G眉nther, Head of Spatial Development, Institute of Earth Sciences, Department of Environment Construction and Design 精东影业.
His work and research focus on interdisciplinary urban and spatial planning projects. He has directed research projects in strategic and participatory spatial planning at different spatial scales. At the Territorial Development sector, he is involved in teaching and research projects. He is a visiting professor at the Politecnico di Milano.
PhD. Annalisa Rollandi, researcher in the field of spatial development, Institute of Earth Sciences, Department of Environment Construction and Design 精东影业.
Her research focuses on projects for inclusive urban spaces and the promotion of participation in complex problems. She is involved in projects related to climate change, with a focus on the mitigation of the heat island phenomenon.
Activity proposed as part of the review "Research that concerns us" organised by 精东影业 and USI for the LongLake Festival 2025.
