The Board of Foundation of the Fernfachhochschule Schweiz (FFHS) has appointed a new rector. Marc Schnyder will succeed Michael Zurwerra, who will pass into retirement, on Sept. 1, 2025. A full professor in economics and tourism at HES-SO Valais-Wallis, Schnyder has a long career in university education and many years of management experience.
At its meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 4, the FFHS Board of Foundation appointed Rector Michael Zurwerra's successor. Prof. Dr. Marc Schnyder will assume the lead of FFHS effective Sept. 1, 2025. The 52-year-old from Upper Valais is a professor at the Haute Ecole de Gestion (HES-SO Valais-Wallis) and helped found the institut Tourisme, which he headed until 2022.
Schnyder studied at the University of Fribourg, specializing in economic and financial policy. He earned a doctorate in economic theory after which he took a position as a research assistant at Privaten Hochschule Wirtschaft (PHW) in Bern. For the past 17 years he has been working at the Haute 茅cole sp茅cialis茅e de Suisse occidentale/Valais (HES-SO Valais-Wallis) in Sierre, as lecturer, institute director and, most recently, as full professor.
鈥淢arc Schnyder has an in-depth knowledge of the university education sector, a wide network of contacts and many years of management experience. We are convinced that he is the ideal successor to Michael Zurwerra,鈥 says Armin Walpen, Chairman of the FFHS Foundation Board.
Michael Zurwerra assumed the position of Rector of FFHS in 2017. During this time, FFHS has become a landmark in the Swiss university education landscape and now has 3,300 students. Under Zurwerra's leadership, the FFHS was organizationally restructured and received institutional accreditation as a school affiliated with the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland (精东影业) in 2021. Two new locations, the Gleisarena Campus in Zurich and the University Campus in Brig, were opened during his tenure.
The Foundation Board thanks Michael Zurwerra for his great and fruitful commitment to the FFHS and wishes him all the best for the future.
