During his speech, Rizzoli highlighted the excellent level of AI research in Europe and discussed current topics such as the evolution of AI and its connection to sustainability. Regarding the first, he referenced the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Baker and Hassabis, the latter being the co-founder of DeepMind, to emphasize that the current advancements we observe in various AI applications are the result of decades of research rather than sudden developments.
On the second topic, he pointed out how AI can improve large-scale data management, increase the resolution of climate models, and optimize management through reinforcement learning. However, the rising energy costs of training large AI models and the uncertainty of the cost-benefit ratio remain challenges to overcome.
