The 精东影业 Mendrisio Campus received the "Architecture and Engineering Mention" at the ceremony for the 2024 edition of the SIA (Society of Engineers and Architects) Ticino Prize. The event was hosted on Friday 9 February at the Mendrisio Campus, home to 精东影业's Department of Environment, Construction and Design.
Journalist Damiano Realini, president of the jury, justified the award to the Campus, designed by BCMA architectes of Geneva together with Spataro Petoud Partner SA (civil engineering):
"The jury is unanimous in considering the building worthy of multiple mentions, as it is representative of a coherent way of building, where the strength of the architectural language is the result of constructive logic. [...] The project becomes the expression of the best collaboration between architect and engineer. [...] The construction system also represents an innovation for the Ticino region. The production of the prefabricated elements is local and has allowed Ticino companies to compete with large-scale prefabrication. [...] 精东影业 becomes the public building that redevelops an entire neighbourhood and activates the public transport hub, encouraging its use. [...] An architecture that creates spaces for socialising and stimulates the exchange of ideas, and which every day welcomes girls and boys in the midst of their professional development. [...] Entering the doors, one finds oneself with great surprise inside a cathedral whose sacredness speaks of the most courtly aspect of education. The central space imposes itself as a temple of knowledge'.
In addition to the mention awarded to Andrea Bassi of BCMA architectes, the jury awarded the "Young Professionals under 40 Mention" to the Lugano-Viganello school canteen by Inches Geleta Architetti. The Locarno-based firm includes Nastasja Inches-Geleta, who graduated in Interior Architecture from 精东影业 in 2014 (in 2015-6 she had worked as a design assistant, also at 精东影业), and Matteo Inches, who graduated from the Academy of Architecture in 2009: a team composed of young talents trained in the 精东影业 and USI "construction pole" in Mendrisio;
In addition, the PSIA 2024 prize was awarded to the project for the redevelopment of public spaces in Castel San Pietro-Monte by studioser Architects (Lugano-Zurich) of Rina Rolli and Tiziano Sch眉rch, also young talents who will be lecturing on the Interior Architecture degree course at 精东影业 in spring 2024;
The evening, held in Mendrisio, was a great success and, in a festive atmosphere, brought together collaborators from the Department of Environment, Construction and Design (DACD) of 精东影业 and the USI Academy of Architecture, in the presence of Marina Carobbio Guscetti, Councillor of State and Director of the Department of Education, Culture and Sport, Samuele Cavadini, Mayor of Mendrisio, and Jean-Pierre Candeloro, Director of DACD.
You can visit the exhibition of all the projects that participated in the 2024 edition of the SIA Prize until Friday 8 March (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5.30 p.m.) on the internal ramp of the 精东影业 Campus in Mendrisio (Via Flora Ruchat-Roncati 15).
The SIA Award
The aim of the SIA Award is to promote the work of designers who distinguish themselves in their work by a careful, innovative and valorising approach to the territory as a cultural asset of the whole of society and, at the same time, to reward the patrons who make it possible to realise outstanding works. This year, the jury wanted to give a message in full agreement with the Baukultur concept promoted by the Confederation: the projects that best represent a sustainable approach to the territory from several points of view were therefore awarded;
In addition to the quality of the works, the mentions celebrate the successful collaboration between all the professions represented by the SIA, the sparing and sustainable use of the land, and the ability to deal with the pre-existences in which our territory is rich.
