Paolo, after eight years as a primary school teacher, now teaches in a reduced staff class in a special school and is attending the second year of the Master's programme in Specialised Pedagogy and Inclusive Education.
Paolo, why did you choose a university education and why ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ in particular?
â¶Ä‹I chose a university education because I felt the need to expand my knowledge in order to better respond to the difficulties that many pupils face on a daily basis. After working for a year and a half in special education, I realised how important it is to acquire specific skills in specialised pedagogy and inclusive didactics. ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ attracted me because of its practical and theoretical approach and the attention it pays to the needs of working professionals, allowing me to combine study and work.
You have chosen to study in parallel with your professional and family activity. How do you find this mode of study? What do you particularly appreciate?
â¶Ä‹Studying in parallel with professional and family life is certainly challenging. Working 80% and with a young child, managing everything is a real challenge, sometimes requiring me to make sacrifices to reconcile all aspects of my life: family, work and study, but also sport, which is very important to me. Nevertheless, working with my students is extremely rewarding. Of my studies at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ, I particularly appreciate the practical modules, which on several occasions have provided me with tools and knowledge to deal with complex situations at work.
Is there a study or practice experience during your time at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ that has positively marked you and that you would like to recount?
â¶Ä‹One of the most significant experiences concerns a module I followed in which oppositional and challenging behaviour was addressed, with a special focus on autism. In the classes where I work there are several pupils on the spectrum, and thanks to the knowledge acquired in this course I was able to adapt teaching strategies to best meet their specific needs. This module has given me greater confidence and competence in dealing with situations where personalised attention is required.
What advice would you give to those considering enrolling in the same Master's programme?
â¶Ä‹I would definitely recommend tackling the Master's programme by choosing an appropriate work percentage. I would advise against working for more than 60% in order to be able to reconcile work and school life with private life. I also suggest approaching the study with a critical spirit, curiosity and openness. It is a challenging path, but every effort is amply rewarded in the fieldwork.
