Diatolumen
¾«¶«Ó°Òµ Image Focus
Diatolumen is a lampshade inspired by forms generated from the machine learning system, StyleGAN, using Runway software. Trained from 500 microscopic images of diatoms, the system generated new diatoms created with artificial intelligence, which were successively used as inspiration to create a 3D model of a lampshade, a symbolic object, chosen with the aim to illuminate our creativity towards a more active co-design between nature, technology and humanity.
Diatolumen is designed with using 3d modeling software, Blender and printed with a Prusa 3D printer. The sleek and elegant shapes are made in the style of the diatoms used to train the ML model. The light emanating from the lampshade spreads over the surrounding surfaces presenting itself in ever-changing shapes, in which the user can recognize and feel the strength of the union between man and nature.
The creative process stars with the collection of several images, approximately 500 diatoms, to create a useful dataset for training the ML model. The training is performed through the open-source Runway ML tool, which returns an endless series of new and unique images based on the diatoms in complete autonomy. The new shapes obtained is used as the basis for the lampshade design, subsequently modelled digitally and fabricated using a Prusa 3D printer.
