A medical surgeon, Ph.D. in Neurophysiology, Associate Professor of Physiology at the Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences, University of Bologna, he conducts his research in the field of hibernation physiology and neuroscience. He is the coordinator of the Topical Team Hibernation of the European Space Agency (ESA), associated with the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), affiliated with the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and a member of the national board of the Italian Society of Neuroethics (SiNE). He received the third prize for popularizing science Alberto Dosi 2019- popularizing articles section.
