On Wednesday, 14 May 2025, the International Restoration Exhibition in Ferrara, now in its 30th edition, will host the technical meeting La Fabbrica di San Pietro: lavori per il Giubileo tra memoria e transizione (The Fabbrica di San Pietro: work for the Jubilee between memory and transition) by Dr. Pietro Zander, head of the Necropolis and Artistic Heritage Section of the Fabbrica di San Pietro in the Vatican, and engineer Alberto Capitanucci, head of the Technical Area of the Fabbrica di San Pietro.
On this occasion, the work Conservazione e restauro delle decorazioni a stucco sulle volte della Basilica Vaticana (Conservation and Restoration of the Stucco Decorations on the Vaults of the Vatican Basilica) will be presented by Giovanni Nicoli, chief restorer of the conservation intervention project at the Fabbrica (for many years he worked and taught at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ), and by Dr. Giovanni Cavallo, researcher at the Institute of Materials and Constructions ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ (Department of Environment Constructions and Design), in charge of carrying out the scientific investigations of the constituent materials and of the alteration and degradation processes of the surfaces subject to intervention.
The results obtained during the pilot site of the vault of St. Peter’s Papal Basilica, located near the north-west pillar in the north transept, will be illustrated. The intervention, which started on 10 June 2024 and ended on 25 October 2024, under the direction of the Technical Area of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, was necessary for the study and design of the conservation and restoration work that will be carried out, starting in the coming months, on the entire extension of the vaults of the Basilica, as part of the Jubilee 2025 works.
