Medical Devices

Develops medical devices and systems with different integrative steps ranging from nanotechnology (nanomaterials, biointerfaces), microtechnology (microfluidics, photonics and sensor technology) to microdevices. This enables highly integrated systems for advanced therapies, diagnostics and support for precision medicine.

The laboratory infrastructure in the Medical Devices area includes:

Computational structures including modern networked computers (PCs and UNIX/Linux workstations) and software licences for:

  • multi-physics FEM simulation
  • modelling and simulation software
  • CAD tools for PCB and mechanical design automation
  • development of graphical user interfaces
  • microcontroller programming

General technical laboratory equipment including:

  • a platform for PCB design
  • a chain for manufacturing microfluidic circuits in PDMS
  • a complete set of electronic/microtechnical instrumentation for testing and validation

Dedicated biomedical laboratory equipment specifically for: 

  • mould-making and rapid development of disposable kits in biocompatible plastic materials
  • engineering of systems for culturing, handling and conditioning cells and cell derivatives
  • conditioning techniques for specific biocompatible environments
  • process automation in the fields of molecular biology and advanced therapies
  • methods for biomechanical and bioelectrical characterisation of body tissues and fluids
  • monitoring of vital signs and biosignals
