Fabio Guarneri is Head of the schools sector of the Foundation, a national competence and performance centre for education for sustainable development (ESD). He regularly collaborates with the Department of Education and Learning / University of Teacher Education (DFA/ASP) on the creation of training courses in this field.
What is your professional background and activity?
â¶Ä‹I have a degree in forestry and environmental sciences, a Master's degree in environmental management systems and a certificate as an adult trainer. For é»å³Ü³¦²¹³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô21 I advise compulsory schools on projects related to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). I collaborate with the DFA/ASP to promote the topic in the continuing education of teachers.
Why is the ESD important for continuous teacher training?
â¶Ä‹The main objective of the courses is to provide new insights and ideas for approaching ESD in an interdisciplinary way: by integrating it into lessons and not treating it as an additional discipline.
What role does your commitment to Education for Sustainable Development play in your collaboration with the DFA/ASP?
â¶Ä‹Continuing education courses are a practical help to implement ESD in the classroom by embedding it in both school and society.
Can you give us an example of a course that you found particularly effective?
â¶Ä‹A good example is field trips, these activities provide a real understanding of ESD in all its dimensions (environmental, social and economic) and the pedagogical principles on which it is based, e.g. systemic thinking, the long-term approach and learning by discovery.
How do these courses help to address the challenges facing teachers and our society?
â¶Ä‹Our society is faced with increasingly complex challenges. Schools can make a huge contribution to sustainable development and continuous teacher training is one of the keys to achieving this goal. Courses allow teachers to experience knowledge and skills to enable pupils to grow aware and critical of their surroundings.
