R. Banfi - Designing digital solutions that favour user experience

What led you to choose an education in design?
The creative sector has always fascinated me and I always knew that my professional path would go in that direction. I gave substance to this aspiration by attending the CSIA, Centro Scolastico per le Industrie Artistiche in Lugano, where I obtained a diploma (AFC) in hand weaving. With the knowledge that communication technologies would be my future, I enrolled in the Bachelor in Visual Communication at ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ. During the three-year course, I was able to deepen my knowledge in the areas that interested me most, thus shaping my current career.
What aspect of your training did you particularly appreciate?
The courses on the design process were very valuable for my career progress. Understanding that during the realisation of a digital product or service, there are clear methodological steps to follow and iterate in order to create an artefact based on the real needs of the end user, was a solid basis for facing the first challenges in the contemporary digital world of work. It was also essential to have the presence, in the various courses I took during the master's programme, of professionals active in the sector, who regularly confronted the challenges proposed during the projects.
What are you currently working on?
I currently work at SpotMe, a company at the forefront of digital solutions for in-person, hybrid and virtual events. My responsibility is to optimise and design the entire user experience of our product ecosystem. The users of the platform are multiple: event organisers, speakers, moderators and final participants. It is therefore very challenging to design for different needs and uses. Furthermore, I am a lecturer at the University of Lucerne, where I teach a course on designing digital interfaces for public administration, thanks to the skills I acquired during a previous professional experience.

What advice would you give to a girl or boy who wants to embark on the same educational/occupational path as you?
Not to be overwhelmed by the numerous inputs found online. Many digital solutions can be appealing but poorly designed. Usability is the basis of our profession.
