Military service
Personal leave - an alternative to military deferment
When you are expected to be briefly absent (e.g. for one day to take an exam), it is possible to request a personal leave of absence without missing the entire course and without having to request a deferment.
Personal leave is time off granted by the competent commander on personal application. You must submit your application for personal leave before entering service. In serious and unplannable cases (e.g. accident/death in your family), you may also apply for leave while on duty. Your unit commander is responsible for the decision.
During recruit school, there is the possibility of a free-choice leave, i.e. time off, lasting up to two times 24 hours per service, granted to all military personnel.
The army offers the possibility of submitting leave applications digitally via a special app. To log in, you have to scan the QR code on the back of your personal marching orders.
Deferment of service
Applications for deferment (advancement or postponement of service) must be presented duly completed and signed to the ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ Secretariat of Department/ Affiliated School for the necessary approval at least 14 weeks before the start of the service. Please use the attached form. The procedures are valid at federal level. The obligation to enter service remains valid until the deferment of service is granted.
Fractioning the Recruit School
Recruit school (SR) takes 18 or 21 weeks and must in principle be completed in its entirety. Only upon request in exceptional and duly justified cases may a soldier interrupt SR once and complete it in two periods. Please use the attached form.
â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹â¶Ä‹
- The first part of SR is 13 weeks long and obligatory and can be taken from week 27 to 39 inclusive.
- In order not to miss the first two weeks of courses (38 and 39) you must ask your commander for a fortnight' holiday.
- The second part of the SR must be taken in the summer break of the following year, i.e. from week 24.

Civil service
Information intended for persons subject to civilian service.
Civilian service is a service performed by persons who, for reasons of conscience, cannot fulfil their obligation to perform military service. This community service is carried out in cooperation with employment institutions recognised by the Federal Office for Civilian Service.
Bringing forward or postponing an annual employment obligation of 26 days
It is possible to anticipate or postpone the annual deployment obligation, provided one or more deployment agreements for a total of at least 52 days of service for the calendar year in question are submitted in good time. By doing so, it will not be necessary to submit an application for postponement of service as the regional centre will be able to draw up the relevant convocations. Please note: recovery is not possible in the year of dismissal from the civil service.
Deferment of service
Fulfilment of the obligation to serve is the most important obligation for a civil servant, which means that one must have valid reasons for applying for a deferment of service. If there is no guarantee that the civil servant will fulfil all the days of service by the age of dismissal, the application will be rejected despite the fact that there is a valid reason for requesting deferment. If the civil servant performs less than 26 days of service per year, he/she must pay a military exemption fee.
The procedures are valid at federal level. See also:
